Ragin' Cajuns Football continues to remember the late DJ Looney.
Wednesday, Head Coach Billy Napier spoke for the first time publicly since his death Saturday. Napier said he was one of the speakers at Looney's memorial on Monday and used an old adage to describe his impact.
"I talked to the team about the old adage, you're either a giver or a taker. I think DJ is a fine example of what it means to be a giver," Napier said. "He would always think of others before himself. He had a unique ability to sense when someone needed to be encouraged, when someone needed to laugh. I think he was always giving of himself to others. Very positive, great energy, always smiling. Very bright, very intelligent guy that understood not only the big picture game of football, but more importantly the human element game of football. This was a special guy that's gone way too soon."
He also remembers him for being so lighthearted. Napier's called Looney "the funniest guy on the team" in the past and told a story of how DJ was the first to the press box on Saturdays, where he'd scout out the game day meal.
"He'd always go check out the spread of food they had up there. For the media and for the opposing coaches. Early in the game, I would always ask him how's the spread up there. The guys would joke how he would get hot dogs for everybody and have em ready for them when they got to the booth. That's one example of how he kept everything light."
The life of D.J. Looney doesn't fit into two minutes and 21 seconds of video. His time with us was still far too short. Thank you for everything, Coach.
