LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Baseball used two unconventional runs and road another stellar effort from its pitching staff to claim victory in the series opener against Georgia State, taking down the Panthers, 2-0, at Russo Park on Friday night.

Riding the arms of pitchers Jack Burk and Austin Perrin, the Ragin’ Cajuns (23-28, 11-14) saw the duo strike out 11 batters with just one walk to secure a second consecutive shutout victory and the third on the year.

Burk went 5.0 innings in the contest, allowing just two hits and fanning six to earn his third win of the season. He was relieved by Perrin, who finished things off with 4.0 innings of three-hit, no-run ball and five strikeouts to claim his second save of the year.

Senior Orynn Veillon led the team at the plate with two hits in three at bats to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by a Ragin’ Cajun this season. Over the 15-game stretch, Veillon is hitting at a .397 (25-for-63) clip with 18 RBI and 11 extra-base hits.

Hunter KasulsDaniel Lahare and Tremaine Spears were responsible for the other three Louisiana hits in the game, while Handsome Monica was responsible for the Ragin’ Cajuns’ lone RBI.

Louisiana took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Monica flied out to center field, allowing Veillon to tag and score from third. The lead doubled in the fifth when Brennan Breaux scored on a passed ball to produce the final score of 2-0.

Georgia State’s (14-36, 5-20) Hunter Gaddis pitched a solid game, striking out 11 Ragin’ Cajuns and holding Louisiana to just the two runs in 8.0 innings of action, but Perrin kept the Panthers off the board in the final four innings to wrap up the shutout.
