Press Release

LAFAYETTE – A pair of two-run innings was too much for the Louisiana baseball team to overcome as Loyola Marymount evened the weekend series with a 4-1 victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday at Russo Park.

Louisiana (6-8) had its chances to get back into the game with two runners on in both the fifth and eighth innings, but were unable to push any additional runs across the plate.

Orynn Veillon and Todd Lott were the offensive catalysts for the Ragin’ Cajuns with two hits each, while Hayden Cantrelle provided the final hit during the contest. Sebastian Toro produced Louisiana’s lone RBI.

Junior pitcher Dalton Horton took the loss on Saturday, giving up two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work. He was relieved by Jacob Schultz, who allowed a run in 4.1 innings, but gave up just three hits and struck out four batters.

Loyola Marymount’s Josh Agnew was credited with the win after throwing 6.1 innings of three-hit, one-run ball. Nick Sogard led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two RBI.

It was the Lions that struck first in the top of the third, scoring twice with the help of a single and a triple. With a runner on third and no outs, Loyola Marymount was in position to score more runs, but Louisiana forced three-straight innings to get out of the frame.

Louisiana’s best opportunity of the contest came in the fifth when Veillon, who roped a leadoff triple to left center, was brought home on a groundout by Toro to cut the lead to 2-1. A walk and a single later, the Ragin’ Cajuns had runners on second and third with one out, but back-to-back flyouts ended the threat.

The Lions then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning via two singles to solidify the 4-1 victory.

Sunday’s rubber match at Russo Park is schedule to begin at noon. Fans can stream the game on the Ragin’ Cajuns Digital Network of listen to the call on KPEL 96.5 FM.
