HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Louisiana’s five-game road swing continues this weekend, February 22-24, when it makes the short drive to Huntsville, Texas, for a three-game series with Sam Houston State at the Don Sanders Baseball Stadium.
Friday’s opener, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+, is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m., while first pitch for Saturday’s game and Sunday’s game is set for 3 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (1-3) are seeking their first road win of the early season after dropping its road opener on Wednesday to Louisiana Tech, 3-2, in 10 innings. Louisiana dominated the game offensively, outhitting the Bulldogs, 10-5, but were unable to push more than two runs across the plate.
Senior Gavin Bourgeois leads the offensive charge through four games, hitting .400 (4-for-10) with four RBI to his name. Fellow senior Hunter Kasuls (.389) and junior Brennan Breaux (.333) are also hitting over .300 and are a combined 11-for-30 on the year.
On the mound, Austin Perrin will get the start for Louisiana on Friday night. Perrin’s lone appearance this season came on opening night against Texas, when he pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out three.
Dalton Horton will be the starter on Saturday after carding an impressive victory in the series finale against Texas, striking out five and allowing just one run on three hits in 5.0 innings of action. Sunday’s starter remains TBA.
Sam Houston State is 2-1 this season with wins against Manhattan and at Stetson. The Bearkats are led offensively by Reese Johnson’s hot bat, which has produced four hits this year in seven at-bats.
Hayden Wesneski, Cody Wolf and Nick Mikolajchak will be the weekend starters for the Bearkats, with Wesneski and Wolf entering the series with wins under their belts and outings of at least 5.0 innings.
Louisiana leads the all-time series, 16-4, and has won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two programs. However, Sam Houston State claimed a victory in the last meeting between the programs on February 26, 2017, winning the game, 8-3, in Huntsville.
