Lafayette native and LSU defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin is opting out of the 2020 season. That news was confirmed to KATC by Shelvin's family.

Shelvin informed the Tigers coaching staff of his decision Monday morning.

Shelvin was a key member of the LSU defense last year, that helped them win a national title in 2019. He finished with 39 tackles and 3 TFLs, but his impact can be seen in team numbers. As the nose tackle, he was the cog in the middle, helping the Tigers boast the 21st ranked rush defense in the nation, allowing under 121 yards on the ground per game.

ESPN's Todd McShay has Shelvin projected as the 23rd best prospect in the 2021 NFL draft.

Shelvin becomes the 4th member of the Tigers to opt-out of this season, joining DL Neil Farrell, DB Kary Vincent and WR Ja'Marr Chase.
