Game of the Week: 6 Ascension Episcopal at 3 Notre Dame
The Division III quarterfinals brings us the first meeting between Ascension and Notre Dame. The wile veteran program who is an annual championship contender versus the new kids on the block.
After a 2016 run to the dome, Ascension moved from Division IV to III where it's sat a second tier team. In its first three seasons in Division III the Gators went a respectable 24-10., but against the best measuring stick they had, 0-3 versus Catholic High of New Iberia. The district power outscored Ascension 121-42 in those three games.
Usher in 2020 where the Gators are 8-0 and relativity unchallenged. For the first time in program history Ascension beat Catholic this season and that win is changing the way some view the team.
"It says a lot about their program," said Pioneers' coach Lewis Cook. "They've been getting closer and closer each year, and this year it was their turn to turn the tables against Catholic High.... You can see the development in their program and this is a group, a senior group that's played a lot, they have a lot of games under their belt and that's what makes it a little scary."
The Pios will still be the favorite in many eyes. Notre Dame was beat 42-21 by LCA this year, but has imposed its will during the other seven games. Last season Catholic beat Notre Dame 24-21 in the state quarterfinals, the first time the Pios hadn't advanced to the semifinals since 2013.
