Parades have been the go-to for many during the pandemic and an Opelousas woman is one of many who celebrated that way.

She's a graduate of Nicholls State University's Nursing Program.

Since the university moved to virtual commencement's, her family still wanted to celebrate together, in a safe way.

A parade to mark a milestone for Victoria Gallien. Because of the pandemic, the nursing school graduate couldn't have a traditional ceremony, but her mother, Marien Gallien, made sure she could still celebrate with family in a safe way.

"After all her long hard work, I said no we're gonna do something. You leave it up to me," said Marien Gallien.

Marien says within a few days, she was able to coordinate with family and friends to make sure Victoria would have a parade on the day of her schedules graduation ceremony.

"I'm very proud of my daughter. I mean she worked very hard and just to show that I really wanted to honor her. I figured look at it this way, during this pandemic you'll be honored solo," said Marien Gallien.

The parade wasn't the only surprise. Victoria also received her nursing pin. Since the pandemic canceled her pinning ceremony, her mom wanted to still honor the achievement.

"I'm thankful that she was able to put this all together with family and friends. I really appreciate everything she does for me. It was really nice," said Victoria Gallien.

Now Victoria says she's ready to begin her career.

"I plan on working at Children's Hospital in the Pediatric intensive care unit and from there, I'll probably go back to school back for my master's in nursing within five years or so" said Gallien.

Marien Gallien says she couldn't be more proud of her daughter.

"Just to see the smile on her face knowing that she's excited now, brings joy to my heart," said Gallien.
