Fighting is being encouraged in some parts of New Iberia all in good fun. The summer heat is on and the water fights are underway. The refreshing, friendly competition also comes with a message.
It's an old childhood game that is keeping adults and children entertained in New Iberia. It's not just water gun fights, they also comes with a lesson.
"We don't want the kids to grow up and saying it's cool to kill people. We have to show them how to have fun," said organizer, Deondre Spencer.
While home for the summer from college, Deondre Spencer started "Water guns over guns." He says some of the things he knows are going on in his hometown, people in opposite sides of town having issues with one another and turning into unnecessary violence.
"Everyday we'll try to do something to bring everybody back and get New Iberia back as one," said Spencer.
