Residents flood to Cajun Field to fill sandbags ahead of Barry

LAFAYETTE — The sandbag location in Cajun Field is remaining open until the sand is gone.

Groups of people are now at the site in the Cajun Field parking lot where city workers are assisting in filling bags.

Crews will be on scene there until 8:00 pm Friday but if sand is no longer available, the site will close. City officials says that over 90,000 bags of sand has been distributed across the city in the last three days.

Some residents saying that the increased level of unease for many may be directly releated to the 2016 floods that impacted so many in Acadiana.

"I wasn't as concerned in 2016," said Lafayette resident Michael Rineberger. "But being one of those who flooded I understand the apprehension some have."

So far The City of Opelousas has closed its sandbag location at 4:00 pm others are scheduled to close at 7:00 p.m.
