The Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department began its youth basketball program today at the Dupuis Recreational Center.
The program is part of the department's "Building Adults Through Athletics" campaign. Its purpose is to help local children become productive and well-rounded citizens by teaching responsibility.
SMILE Community Action Agency, SLCC, Kiwanis Club of Southwest, and other local organizations were on hand to provide information on their programs to the children and their parents.
"We have different fraternities and sororities and church groups involved, just showing different avenues and opportunities for the kids that they may not be aware of besides learning the good skills through team sports," explained Frank Wittenberg, Programs Manager for the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department.
