At the Dupuis Recreational Center a program for youth centering around athletics is hoping to build productive members of society.
On Saturday, the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department will begin its Youth Basketball Program. Organizers say that through the BATA (Building Adults Through Athletics) Program, they hope to prepare children and young adults for society.
"It's about meeting the needs of the entire family, not just the kids,"Walter Guillory said of the program.
The basketball program begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday January 4, 2020, at the Dupuis Recreational Center in Lafayette. Organizers of the BATA program have already held several enrichment events for families in the city. In October, the Family Outreach Enrichment Program is was held which intended to meet the educational needs of parents and the physical, social, educational, and health needs of the kids.
SMILE Community Action Agency, South Louisiana Community College, SWLA (Center for Health Services), Josh Edmond (mentoring), Kiwanis' Club of Southwest, Knights of Peter Claver, One Hundred Black Men, Super I Foods (Willow Street location), Move the Mindset (Chess) will also be there providing their programs for the kids and parents.
