Organizers of Downtown Alive! announced Thursday evening that the spring season's kick-off concert Friday has been canceled.

In a statement posted to the event's Facebook page, organizers say this is "the right move for public safety at this time."

Downtown Lafayette Unlimited CEO Anita Begnaud says organizers work with artists to come to a mutual agreement when it comes to a cancellation. Begnaud added that organizers are still exploring the possibility of postponing upcoming shows to late spring or early summer. A canceled artist can be rescheduled for next season if they're available.

The announcement comes after Lafayette Mayor-President called for a suspension of all public gatherings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It should be noted there are NO cases of the novel coronavirus in Lafayette.

Leadership and staff of DTA! are in contact with healthcare and government officials and will continue to monitor the situation in regards to future Downtown Alive! events.

DTA! will keep the community updated on future shows.

Begnaud added, "We appreciate the support of the community. It's the longest standing free, outdoor music event in the state. We know when we bring DTA back up again, that we will get that support. If people will be out and about this weekend, support a local business. I know people are concerned about how this will impact...if you're out and about this weekend, think about supporting a local business."
