Work is already underway to ease potential flooding associated with the storm.

In 2017, following the historic flood the year before, voters approved the reallocation of an existing tax for drainage improvement.

Lafayette Consolidated Government identified 77 drainage improvement projects across the parish.

After the historic flood in 2016, LCG and Lafayette voters made drainage improvement a top priority, right down to the ditches.

"We've targeted 370 miles of roadside ditches for assessment and we're using in house resources to do that and 190 miles of that 370 have been maintained to date," said LCG Chief communication officer, Jamie Angelle.

Lafayette Consolidated Government chief communication officer, Jamie Angelle says, LCG is the process of developing a recurring city parish drainage master plan and maintenance program to help mitigate major flooding in the parish.

"When we have a system to maintain them so none of them get bad and we can keep up with all demands and all the miles of drainage we have in this parish," said Angelle.

As for coulees, LCG identified 77 critical projects. Since construction began in 2018, 34 of those or about 60 miles, have been cleared across the parish.

"There are gonna be times where we get unprecedented rainfall and that rain will collect a lot faster than it can drain, but as far as overall, parish wide, we're in much better
condition than we were back in 2016," said Angelle.
