An investigation is underway by the U.S. Department of Education over how LSU reports and investigates crimes on campus.

The case comes after multiple students raised allegations that LSU mishandled domestic violence and sexual misconduct cases, The Advocate reports.

LSU officials on Friday acknowledged the investigation, which centers around possible violations of the federal Clery Act, which requres college campuses that receive federal funding to issue warnings about threats on campus and to make public information about crimes on campus.

"This week, LSU was notified that the U.S. Department of Education would be conducting a campus crime program review related to Clery Act requirements," said LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard on Friday afternoon. "Campus safety and the well being of those at LSU is always our priority, and following Clery guidelines for reporting and notifying the campus community is an important part of crime prevention that we take extremely seriously."

The investigation comes after a report from USA Today that the university had mishandled sexual misconduct complaints against students including top athletes such as Derrius Guice and Drake Davis.

According to The Advocate, the Department of Education will conduct a review off-site and LSU is being asked to turn over 26 different types of records from between 2016 and 2020, including LSU Police Department call logs and Greek Life misconduct incident reports.
