The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has started making preparations for potential icy road conditions next week.

On Friday, crews began moving salt to staging areas across the state as winter precipitation was expected on Monday followed by extreme cold on Tuesday morning.

The department says that crews will be out scouting bridges and roadway and are prepared to respond when necessary.

As conditions deteriorate on Monday and Tuesday, DOTD is encouraging people to stay off of roads and follow safe driving tips.

State Troopers will also be actively monitoring the roads and helping drivers throughout the weather event.

KATC spoke with LSP Troop I spokesperson Tpr. Thomas Gossen who urged residents to limit their travel and heed warnings from state officials and law enforcement.

If you absolutely have to travel, here are some more tips:

  • Give yourself some extra space when behind other vehicles
  • Never use cruise control during icy conditions
  • If you start to skid, take your foot off the gas and steer until you regain control
