An 8-year-old is in critical condition after a drive-by shooting Tuesday night in Jeanerette.

Deputies say Jonas Hawk, 26, opened fire on a group of people at a home on North Neco Town Road. Tonight, Hawk is facing 15 counts of attempted first degree murder.

"I could've been outside when the person started shooting," Beulah Provost says.

Provost has lived on Neco Town Road for 15 years and says she's never feared for her safety, until now.

"I was inside looking at TV when i heard three shots that I hoped was firecrackers," says Provost.

Those turned out to be gunshots. One of those bullets hit an 8-year-old boy.

Provost added, "I used to see him playing in the front a lot. When I heard one of the kids was shot, I hoped he wasn't badly hurt."

Deputies say the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the suspect, Jonas Hawk, and the boy's uncle.

Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Wendell Raborn says, "He decided to drive and fire at least four rounds towards the crowd. And his intended victim escaped unharmed. Anytime you hurt a kid, they haven't done anything, they don't deserve that."

Hawk's bond has been set at $350,000 and the victim is in critical condition in a Baton Rouge hospital.
