Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Men’s Basketball Player Mylik Wilson was one of 50 players at the mid-major level to be named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List, in an announcement by CollegeInsider.com.

The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.

Wilson, who was the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and a Kyle Macy Freshman All-America selection, is averaging 14.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in his first three games for Louisiana in the 2020-21 season.

As a freshman, Wilson averaged 11.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game to finish and lone Division I freshman to average 11/5/2/2 during the season and join a list of historical freshmen – including James Harden (Arizona State), Michael Redd (Ohio State), Caron Butler (Connecticut), Tyreke Evans (Memphis) and Zion Williamson (Duke) – to post similar numbers.

The award is named after Lou Henson who is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.

Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.

Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

Louisiana will return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 8) when it hosts LSU Alexandria in a 6 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.

The Cajundome will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020-21 season (unless state COVID-19 policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season. The Department of Athletics will quickly communicate any schedule adjustments or changes to attendance protocols through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com.

Getting tickets for Ragin' Cajuns Men's Basketball is available through mobile ticketing from Ticketmaster. Download the #GeauxCajuns app on your smart phone to begin the process.
