LAFAYETTE — Matt Rhule left Baylor and took LSU's Joe Brady with him. The dominoes falling in the wake could include Louisiana's Billy Napier.
This isn't the first rumor circling the Cajuns' head coach who led the team to 11 wins this season. The program's first double-digit win season.
Napier was rumored to be a the leading candidate at Mississippi State, before he turned down an interview. (Though that didn't stop some media outlets from reporting that he was a slam dunk.)
News surfaced again this week linking Napier to Baylor. LSU's defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is also a candidate according to FootballScoop.com
Napier remains under contract at Louisiana through 2023, but a two-year extension reported on two weeks ago remains in the wind.
KATC submitted a public records request to the university for the head coach's contract. The University returned two documents. One signed in 2018, another signed in August of 2019. The school tells KATC that the extension announced in January is agreed to in principle, and "is in approval process between Coach Napier's representation and the University board."
According to the obtained contracts, Napier's buyout since the new year is $1.25 million. His buyout began at $2.75 million when his initial contract was signed, and it goes down in each subsequent year.
