Summer dazzles in 2-0 win over Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. (Press Release) – For the second consecutive start Summer Ellyson fired a shutout and the offense manufactured a pair of late runs leading No. 10 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball to a 2-0 win over Georgia Southern on Friday at Eagle Field.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (27-4, 10-0 Sun Belt) used an RBI ground out from Lexie Comeaux in the sixth inning to end a scoreless affair which had carried on during due to key defensive plays made by the Eagles (16-16, 3-7 Sun Belt).

Alissa Dalton’s two-out triple in the seventh inning led to an insurance run when she scored off a misplay at home on an attempted steal.

Ellyson, who prevented any Georgia Southern base runners from moving past second base the entire night, extended her consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak to 13 straight and assured herself of remaining in the nation’s lead for victories (19).

Louisiana extended its road win streak to eight games and moved within one win of extending its string of consecutive Sun Belt series won (presently at 49 straight dating back to March 2013).

 

LEADING THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS
Kourtney Gremillion finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk. She stretched her season-best hitting streak to four games.

Raina O’Neal also doubled as the Ragin’ Cajuns posted multiple extra base hits for the ninth straight outing.

Sarah Hudek and Bailey Curry both singled in the sixth inning to set the stage for Comeaux’s grounder which produced the game’s first run off of Eagles pitcher Riley Waldrep.

Ellyson totaled 10 strikeouts which marked her fifth double-digit effort dating back to March 11.

NOTEWORTHY
Summer Ellyson (19-4, 1.33 ERA) moved within one win of reaching 20 wins for the second consecutive season.
The shutout was Summer Ellyson’s fifth complete game shutout of the season. It marked the sixth time in nine appearances in Sun Belt play that she’s blanked the opposition.
Louisiana continued adding to its extra base hits total, with the three collected (two doubles, triple) upping the figure to 106. A season ago, the Ragin’ Cajuns totaled 98 over 57 games.
Kourtney Gremillion continued her strong performance in Sun Belt play. The sophomore first baseman is batting .391 in league play, the third-highest average on the team.
Kara Gremillion is now two starts away from extending her streak of consecutive games started at third base to 200. She has started every game since debuting with Louisiana in 2016.
Summer Ellyson’s shutout marked the 23rd time in 31 outings that the pitching staff has limited the opposition to two runs or fewer.
Louisiana upped its all-time series lead over Georgia Southern to 13-2 and extended its series win streak at Eagle Field to four games.
