Cajuns add seven on National Signing Day

LAFAYETTE (Press Release) – Already one of the best recruiting classes in the history of Louisiana Football, head coach Billy Napier has announced the addition of seven student-athletes who have signed to play for the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2019.

Louisiana’s 2019 class remains the best in the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 72nd nationally, while it is the eighth-best class put together by a Group of Five program. Early signee Kendall Wilkerson also helped the classes ranking after he was named a four-star player by the national recruiting organization.

Louisiana was masterful in composing the class, which now consists of student-athletes from seven different states, with 17 coming from the state of Louisiana. Seven position groups are represented in the class, with an emphasis on both lines and the defensive backfield.

Below is a breakdown of the exciting signing class, with members from the early signing period (*) and the February 6 signing day (**):

Tyler Brown** | OL | 6’2.5 | 303 | Madison, Mississippi | St. Joseph Catholic HS
Another talented offensive line product … Participated in the Mississippi Bernard Blackwell North vs. South Game … Named to the 2A All-District Team in Mississippi … Recognized as the 2018 All Capital Team Offensive Lineman … He was named the VTO Elite Birmingham MVP, as well as a VTO All-American Top 5 Offensive Lineman … Chose Louisiana over offers from Tulane and Southern Miss.

Quintlan Cobb* | DT | 6’4.5 | 314 | Kaplan, Louisiana | Kaplan HS
Will play defensive line for the Ragin’ Cajuns, but made appearances at tight end and running back for Kaplan … Helped his team get to the Class 3A semifinals during his senior season … Chose Louisiana over offers from and Tulane, among others.

Chandler Fields* | QB | 5’11 | 185 | Metairie, Louisiana | Archbishop Rummel HS
One of the top quarterback prospects in the state of Louisiana … The 47th ranked player in Louisiana and the No. 31 pro-style QB in the nation … 247 Sports Composite three-star recruit … Helped his team to a 9-3 record as a senior … As a junior, he completed 179 passes for 2,359 yards and 30 touchdowns … Had offers from Memphis, Nicholls State and Jackson State.

La’Kamion Franklin** | OLB | 6’1 | 213 | Monroe, Louisiana | Neville HS
A dominant outside linebacker prospect … As a senior, he recorded 78 tackles, 42 of which were solo … He also tallied 11 sacks, 25 TFL, 14 hurries, three PBU and one fumble recovery … For his efforts, he garnered First Team All-District, All-Parish and All-State honors … He was also a First Team LCA and LSWA selection … Named defensive MVP.

A.J. Gillie** | OL | 6’2.5 | 310 | Natchitoches, Louisiana | Natchitoches Central HS
One of three offensive linemen to sign on Wednesday, Feb. 6 … He made an appearance in the state’s first-ever LGF Bowl … After a strong senior season, was named to the Louisiana District 2-5A First Team … Chose Louisiana over a scholarship offer from Army.

Andrew Gleason** | OLB | 6’2.5 | 243 | West Monroe, Louisiana | West Monroe HS
A standout, in-state prospect at outside linebacker … After a dominant 2018, he was named First Team All-State, the Northeast Louisiana MVP and the District 2-5A Defensive MVP … He also was recognized by The News Star as its Player of the Year … During his senior season, he tallied 87 tackles along with 12.5 sacks, 14 TFL and 15 quarterback hurries … Helped guide his team to the 2018 state title game … Chose Louisiana over offers from TCU and ULM.

The second-highest rated player of the class according to the 247 Sports Composite, where he is rated a three-star recruit … 80th ranked outside linebacker in the country according to 247 Sports … Helped his team to a 12-2 overall record, including a 5-0 record in district play … Was dominant his senior season with 68 tackles, 12 sacks and a pick six … Chose Louisiana over offers from multiple FBS programs, including South Alabama, SMU, WKU, South Alabama, ULM, Southern Miss, Rice, Tulane and Arkansas State.

A top offensive line prospect from the state of Louisiana, Harrington will add quality depth to the Ragin’ Cajuns’ front five … The 84th rated prospect out of the state in the class … A three-time All-District player … He was a high school teammate of current Louisiana running back, Elijah Mitchell … Threw shot put in high school … Had offers to play at multiple programs, including Baylor, Kansas, Louisiana Tech, ULM and Tulane.

One of the most sought after recruits in the class, fielding offers from programs such as Notre Dame, West Virginia, TCU and Kentucky, Arizona State, Vanderbilt and Utah … Ranked the No. 29 recruit in the state of Louisiana and the 63rd-best athlete nationally by 247 Sports, where he is also listed as a three-star recruit … Played multiple positions in high school, including quarterback and kick returner … He ran for over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons … He was a LSWA Class 4A All-State First Team selection and the Offensive MVP on The Courier/Daily Comet’s All-Region football team as a junior … Accounted for 27 touchdowns as a junior while playing quarterback, while adding an additional four scores on kick returns … Over the last two season, he has accounted for 66 touchdowns.

A talented quarterback who is joining Louisiana from the JUCO ranks … In his lone season at Mt. San Antonio College, he led the team to a 9-2 overall record and a 4-1 mark in conference play … During that span, he completed 63.6 percent of his passes, throwing for 1,811 yards and 19 touchdowns … As a senior at Lakes High School (Tacoma, Wash.), he threw for 2,725 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Amir McDaniel* | CB | 5’8.75 | 167 | Pensacola, Florida | West Florida Tech
Had an impressive junior season with West Florida, leading his team to the state semifinals for the first time in program history…He finished the season with seven interceptions and 68 tackles … His efforts earned him 5A First Team All-State recognition … The 297th rated player out of Florida … Also received offers from Troy, South Alabama, Georgia Southern, Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee.

Clifton McDowell* | QB | 6’2.5 | 200 | Spring, Texas | Spring HS

Another strong in-state offensive line target, he is the second offensive line commit in the 2019 class…Recruited by former Neville lineman and current Louisiana offensive coordinator Rob Sale…The No. 51 rated offensive tackle in Louisiana and 103rd nationally…Received offers from ULM, Texas State, McNeese, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southern.

Grant Paulette** | K | 6’0.5 | 173 | Hebron, Texas | Hebron HS
The lone kicker in the Ragin’ Cajuns 2019 class … A standout from Texas, he earned District 5-6A honors as both a kicker and as a punter … In his last two seasons, he was responsible for 142 points … Went 52-for-54 on extra points and 9-for-12 on field goals … At Louisiana’s football camp, he was named the “Last Camper Standing” after converting on a 57-yard attempt … Held offers from Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Brian Smith, Jr.* | WR | 6’3.5 | 201 | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Glendale C.C. | Barbe HS
A talented wide receiver returning to Louisiana from the junior college ranks…Ranked a three-star JUCO commit by 247 Sports…The No. 20 ranked wide receiver out of Louisiana…He was a two-time First Team All-Conference performer…As a sophomore, he completed 33 passes for 485 yards and five touchdowns…During his freshman season in Glendale, he hauled in 21 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns.
