LAFAYETTE (KATC) — Basketball season is upon us. The Ragin Cajuns are a week away from debuting it’s 2018 squad with it’s season opener against the University of the Virginia Islands. Thursday the team will host an open Vermilion-White scrimmage at the CajunDome at 5 p.m.

Last season Louisiana won a program best 27 games, and who could forget that NIT game against LSU. The fireworks from the postgame interview still make me chuckle.

But 2018 will be a different Cajuns team. Frank Barltley led the team in scoring, he’s gone. Bryce Washington led the team in rebounding, he’s gone. That’s a lot of weight to replace for the Cajuns, and Bob Marlin says Malik Marquetti will be the one that shines.

“He’s been dominant in our scrimmages and practice and he’s playing the best basketball since he’s been here,” said Marlin on Monday. “He’s a hard guy to guard. He’s versatile and can guard different people. Look for us to play small some and play him at the power forward.”
