Cajun women play to 1-1 draw in soccer home opener

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana soccer team got a late equalizer from senior Sarah Kozlowski as the Ragin’ Cajuns earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Sam Houston State in the 2018 home opener on Sunday night at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.

The result moves Louisiana to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Bearkats improve to 1-0-1 overall. Sam Houston State held a 16-8 edge in shots, while keeper Victoria Ryan notched two saves on the evening. Freshman Gwen Mummert led the Cajuns with a pair of shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Louisiana had a strong showing in the first half outshooting the Bearkats 4-3 including two shots on frame as the game would remain scoreless at the half.

Sam Houston State took a 1-0 edge in the 67th minute on a cross from Katy Johnson that sailed into the upper right corner of the net past Ryan.

The Ragin’ Cajuns rallied late as Kozlowski pulled the squad level at 1-all in the 88th minute heading a cross from Erika Sierra past SHSU keeper Christina Hendershot.

Both teams battled in the two overtime periods, but neither side was able to provide a golden-goal as the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.

UP NEXT

Louisiana returns to action on Friday, August 24 with a 7 p.m. contest against Northwestern State at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility. Admission to the contest is free.
