Carencro Bears

Coach: Tony Courville

Record: 10-3 (Lost in Quarterfinals)

District: 5-4A

Notes: Return 17 starters in 2020

A 34-22 loss to Warren Easton in the state quarterfinals was a tough pill to swallow for Carencro.

“Nothing against Warren Easton, but we felt like we did some things that helped them win that game," Carencro Head Coach Tony Courville said. "We had a chance, but gave them that game. They are a quality team. Nothing against that team, but we felt like we didn't fulfill our purpose.”

This signified the end of a year where the Bears won 10 games, and split their district title with Westgate and St. Thomas More. But this year, nothing shy of the Superdome will be good enough.

The Bears will be a favorite in 4A for good reason. The team returns 8 starters on defense, 9 on offense including quarterback Tavion Faulk, Traylon "Popcorn" Prejean and Super 16 running back Kendrell Williams.

When that dymanic trio was healthy last year the offense averaged 45 points per game. Injuries were a bug for this team last fall. Prejean was one of 12 players who couldn't suit up for that quarterfinal loss. Still, Tony Courville wouldn't write that as an excuse.

Carencro last played for a championship in 2011, losing to West Monroe.

The team carries those expectations returning this fall.

"We just know we can get there," senior linebacker Dylan Smith said. "We know what we're capable of. So we just feel like we have to get there. Especially being a senior and knowing it's your last year, it's your last ride."

It's real exciting. You play along people that's one of the greatest in the state, Kendrell Williams, Popcorn Prejean, John Miller, Tre Jolivette, the greats," Tavion Faulk added. "You want to be just as great as them. But when you play alongside them, they make you feel just average and they're great."
