LAFAYETTE – It’s for the White team, and white bread with beans for the Vermilion team as White beat Vermilion, 81-51, in the 2018 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Football Vermilion & White Spring Finale played Saturday afternoon on Cajun Field.
Sophomore quarterback Levi Lewis was on fire all game long, throwing for 275 yards and two touchdowns while going 14-for-22, including completing a game long 75-yard pass. Junior wide receiver Ja’Marcus Bradley led the game in receiving with five catches for 96 yards, and senior running back Lenard Calloway finished with a game-high 66 yards rushing on 17 carries, scoring three touchdowns in the process to help lead the White team to victory.
On the Vermilion team, senior quarterback Jordan Davis led the team in passing with 117 yards, completing 9-of-13 pass attempts and throwing one touchdown pass. On the ground, junior running back Ashton Johnson finished with a team-high 39 yards on 11 carries.
HALFTIME SCHOLARSHIPS: During halftime, four student-athletes received scholarships for the hard work they’ve put into the Ragin’ Cajuns Football program. Johnson, junior defensive back Deuce Wallace, senior linebacker Chaiziere Malbrue and sophomore wide receiver Jalen Williams were each rewarded for their dedication to the Cajuns program.
SCORING THE GAME: A touchdown gave the scoring team six points; a turnover was three points and a field goal resulted in the normal three points.
When the defense held the offense to a three-and-out it got a point; a converted extra point was one point and any red zone stops resulted in one point for the defense. The scoring system for the "Game Changers" portion was simple, in each individual matchup whoever won scored their team one point.
The situational drills, that finished the day were scored, as well. During the first down drills when the offense got four or more yards, that team received a point, but if the defense holds them to under four yards, the defensive team earned a point. On third down, if the offense converted they got one point and a stop from the defense got them one point.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SCRIMMAGE): After warming up with individual position drills and 7-on-7 drills, the Cajuns spilt up into respective Vermilion and White teams, and a 70-minute running clock was thrown on the board to get things started. The Vermilion team got the ball first after winning the coin toss, and off they went.
The Vermilion team failed to score on the first possession and gave the ball to the White team who went 90 yards in nine plays, capped off by Calloway’s 28-yard touchdown run to get on the board first. Vermilion answered the White team touchdown with a 20-yard field goal from senior Stevie Artigue.
But the next four scores would come from the White team, with Clyefer Bass scoring the next two touchdowns, an eight-yard run and one-yard run, the one-yard TD run capped off an eight play 78-yard drive. Senior kicker Calvin Linden nailed a 29-yard field goal and Calloway scored his second touchdown of the game with 5-yard run at the end of an 11-play, 78-yard drive.
The Vermilion team did get the final touchdown of the full scrimmage portion, when Davis connected with sophomore tight end Chase Rogers for an 11-yard touchdown.
GAMECHANGERS CLOSED THE GAP: The White team had a solid lead on the Vermilion team heading into the final 10 minutes of first half action, but the "Game Changers" portion of the scrimmage allowed for the Vermilion team to close the gap on the White team before the two teams took a break.
IT ALL WRAPPED UP SITUATIONALLY: The day wrapped up with situation drills, with both teams trading possessions after several reps running first down and third down plays. The two groups then moved into the red zone where once again the White team dominated.
Calloway (3-yard run) and Williams (7-yard pass) each scored inside the red zone as the White team padded its lead. Head coach Billy Napier then moved the ball down to the white 25-yard line, where the White team began two-minute drills.
Lewis then wasted no time, connecting with sophomore Kadon Harrison for a 75-yard touchdown pass to end the scrimmage in style.
