Report: LUS was late to notify officials of lime release

LAFAYETTE — The Department of Environmental Quality says the Lafayette Utility System was three hours late in notifying state police of a lime release at its Buchanan Street water plant in February.

That release forced 27 nearby residents to evacuate and 14 people to seek medical attention.

According to a report in The Advocate, LUS was supposed to notify state troopers of the release within an hour of the incident. Interim LUS director Jeff Stewart says workers notified the National Response Center Hotline and assumed they would call state police because the NRCH gave them a claim number.
