EVANGELINE PARISH — If you live in Ville Platte and have past due utility bills, you'll soon have to pay up.
The city hasn't cut utilities or added late fees since March, when the pandemic began. That changes next month.
Despite the upcoming change, assistance is available for residents who need help making ends meet. The Evangeline Parish Community Action Agency says they might be able to help out.
"The need is great here," Carleen Bellard with the Evangeline Community Action Agency said. "Sometimes we don't have a lot of funding to help a lot of the people because the need is so great." She added, " With what we do receive from Louisiana Housing, we try to help as many people as we can."
Right now there is a waiting list, but people are encouraged to apply.
Those residents seeking assistance will need an ID, social security numbers for everyone in the household, proof of income and your utility bill. If eligible, up to $550 can be provided for help with utilities. For those who are on the verge of being cutting off, there are separate funds to help. Those situations are considered a crisis.
"In cases of crisis, that's different from regular funding,"Bellard said. "We provide them what they need in order to not be disconnected. It will give them that amount of what they need to stay connected."
