KAPLAN, La. — The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested a juvenile suspect after a vehicle chase along LA Hwy 14 that left one deputy with serious injuries.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, VPSO deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the juvenile, according to VPSO Public Information Officer Drew David.
David confirmed to KATC that this was the same juvenile who escaped custody last week from Abbeville General Hospital.
In a statement sent to KATC, David said that as deputies attempted to stop the suspect he began to flee in the vehicle. A pursuit ensued with the VPSO being assisted by the Abbeville Police Department, which went from La Hwy 167 to La Hwy 14 west bound.
It was at this time that the suspect eluded one deputy, and slammed into another deputy’s unit. The suspect fled on foot and was captured shortly after.
That deputy has sustained serious injuries and is awaiting Air Med transportation, according to Drew.
The suspect was then taken into custody along with a female passenger. The suspect was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Before his escape last week, the juvenile was charged with Unauthorized Use of a Movable, Simple Burglary, and Intimidation of a Witness.
Drew told KATC that the juvenile will face additional charges, which will be made after the injured VPSO deputy has been treated.
