High water still lingers in Vermilion Parish as of Friday afternoon. While flooding causes some streets to be blocked residents say the aftermath of hurricane Laura is nothing like they were expecting.

“It’s really not much this storm didn’t do much here. You only have to go about 20 minutes West from us to see a totally different story," said Joey Hebert.

Joey Hebert has gone through a few hurricanes and says one left his house in ruins. So before Hurricane, Laura made landfall, Hebert and his family evacuated.

“They were talking about a 17-foot surge here and were about 17 feet about sea level so that scared us. So we did evacuate and it took us about three days to prepare," said Hebert.

While some are settling back in their homes after evacuating, other families never left.

“For the last one we left, so we weren’t here for it. But, the water came up 26 inches, and now this storm came up maybe 8 inches," said Waylon Bourque.

Although some streets in Vermilion Parish are blocked off by barricades there are no major highways being blocked as of Friday afternoon.
