The Maurice Park will once again be open to the public with a few limitations.

Following it's closure during the COVID-19 pandemic, the park will open effective Friday, May 1, 2020.

There will be restrictions for the park in place, as it will only be opened for single-family activities. Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot is asking that those using the public park maintain social distancing guidelines set by Governor John Bel Edwards.

The walking trail will be opened but tennis and basketball courts will remain closed. No group activities of any kind will be allowed.

Similar actions are happening in St. Martin Parish, with parks in Breaux Bridge and other areas set to open on Friday May 1. Read more here.

Mayor Theriot updated on other city policies and departments.

The Maurice Police Department will be distributing masks that were donated to the community by Hanes. Officials are attempting to distribute to senior citizens first, then will make the masks available to others. If you would like a mask, call City Hall at 337-893-6406 to arrange a pickup time.

Beginning Monday, May 4, Maurice City Hall will return to regular operating hours. Building permits will be issued utilizing a different process so please call city Hall for information. Payment of utility bills must still be made by utilizing the drop box in the front of the building. Access to the lobby will still be restricted for the time being.

Theriot said due to the extension, prohibited businesses will remain closed at least until May 15, when the order should expire. He is asking residents to support local businesses whenever possible.

"We appreciated your cooperation. Together we can get through this health crisis," Theriot said. "Together we can overcome this crisis and return to a better normal."
