St. Mary Parish Coroner Eric Melancon provided an update to KBZE Thursday afternoon on the COVID-19 outbreak in the parish.

Dr. Melancon said there have been 9 deaths in the parish related to the virus. There have also been two deaths believed to be COVID related, but those persons tested negative. They are therefore classified, as per the State Registrar of Vital Statistics, as SARS possibly due to COVID-19, Melancon explained.

There is one other death in which results are pending.

Regarding Legacy Nursing Home in Franklin, Dr. Melancon said the rate of spread there has drastically slowed, with 20 residents now positive for COVID-19.

Melancon said there have been five deaths and 10 employees who tested positive.

Legacy staff is continuing to focus on the safety and health of residents and staff, with assistance from LDH and other state and parish entities.
