A 23-year-old Port Barre man has been booked into jail in connection with a fatal shooting on Thursday.

Port Barre Police say Christian A. Sonnier has been arrested and booked on a charge of Second Degree murder in the fatal shooting of Willie Zachary.

Police chief Deon Boudreaux says that Sonnier allegedly made the claim of acting in self defense in relation to the shooting.

On Thursday just before 9:00 p.m., police responded the 200 block of Beauxis Dr. in reference to a shooting. Police say the incident happened during a child custody exchange.

The Port Barre police, along with assistance from a St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office Homicide detective, investigated the shooting.

"Whether the shooting is justifiable or not will be decided in a court. As with any arrested person, Sonnier is considered innocent until proven guilty," a release states.

"This is an unfortunate incident. Someone lost their life. Families, on both sides, are hurting right now. Our community is small and a tragedy, such as this, is shocking. My prayers are with both families and our community," Boudreaux said.

Sonnier is set to appear before a 27th JDC judge on Monday, for a hearing.

No bond has been set.
