At next week's meeting, the Opelousas City Council will consider the resignation of former Police Officer Tyron Andrepont.

On the agenda are two items: one that ends Andrepont's leave without pay, and another that considers the resignation he submitted.

Earlier this month, Andrepont was named in a bill of information charging him with five counts of malfeasance in connection with the alleged battery of an 18-year-old who was hospitalized. The charges accuse Andrepont of beating the teen on the head/face, neck/throat, right arm and right leg. Read more here.

Andrepont had been on administrative leave since last fall, when Police Chief Martin McLendon learned of the incident and turned it over to State Police. He submitted his resignation at the end of june. The agenda item regarding his administrative leave would cut off that leave as of June 18; his resignation would be effective June 29.

Also on the agenda are a presentation from administrators at Opelousas General and state public health officials, as well as introduction of the budget ordinance for the upcoming fiscal year.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. on July 14 at the Municipal Plaza Meeting room on Main Street.

Due to the current COVID-l9 crisis and in compliance with the social and physical distancing order, this month's Council Meeting will be open to a limited general public and will be available for live-streamed viewing on the www.cityofopelousas.com website.

Temperatures will be taken prior to entering the building and masks are required to enter the building.

If your temperature exceeds 99 degrees, you will not be allowed in the building.
