Today is National Voter Registration Day and with Election Day getting closer, the deadlines to register are getting closer as well. For the November 3rd election, you can register online, by mail or in person.

Here’s a look at those deadlines: If you are planning to vote absentee, keep in mind you have until October 30th to request a ballot, but there is a quick turnaround to get your ballot back in.

Because of the pandemic voter registrars offices are seeing more people opt for mail-in ballots, which means results could be delayed.

“I wanted to register to make sure my vote counts,” said Willie McGlory.

Some voters, like Willie McGlory, are not taking any chances when it comes to casting their vote. He opted to register as an absentee voter.

"I want to make sure I bring my ballot in. I don't want to mail it. I want to make sure mine counts because I'm going to bring it right here,” said McGlory.

With an estimated 6,600 more mail-in ballots for the November election, Charlene Meaux with the Lafayette Voting Registrar says many chose this option because of health concerns.

"This is going to be a first timer with this many ballots. We'll have to put in extra hours than normal for an election. We're not sure what to expect by mail,” said Meaux.

Whether you choose to mail-in or vote in person, McGlory says having your voice heard on election night is most important.

"I hope everybody votes, young and old. You can't make it? Call somebody and ask them to take you to the voting poll. That's what I'm doing now to pick up my registration. That's what I'd like to see,” he said.

The last day to register for mail-in voting is October 30th.

If you request an absentee ballot, you can return it by mail by fax or in person. You must ask the registrar for permission to fax your ballot. If someone hand delivers the ballot for you, they must sign an affidavit certifying your relationship.
