Tonight, state police are investigating after a Lafayette Police officer shot a man believed to be involved in a burglary.
It happened on Northwood Drive in Lafayette, where police were called very early this morning. We now know more details about what happened next.
Tuesday morning, Sandi Boutwell woke up to the sound of gunshots. “I laid there about thirty minutes before I decided to get up. When I did, I saw the police lights and I didn’t know what in the world was going on,” said Boutwell.
The shooting happened at around 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. Police were initially called to investigate a burglary.
“We do know that there was a citizen complaint about burglaries in the area and then an altercation took place after that," Louisiana State Police Troop I Public Information Officer Thomas Gossen explained.
Troopers say after the suspect was shot by police, two handguns were found near him, including one believed to have been stolen in the burglary. Neighbors say they’ve recently had problems with break-ins.
“They are going to cars and they are open opening cars. If residents are leaving their vehicles unlocked, it’s an easy access for these individuals to get in the vehicle and leave,” said resident Jules Lee.
The suspect is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries as state troopers continue to investigate.
