Mamou Police are conducting an investigation into claims of excessive force. That incident was caught on camera at a bar in the city Friday night and that video has over 11,000 views since being posted.
The video involves an officer on the police force. The woman who was detained in that video tells us a formal complaint will be filed.
After attending Mamou High School’s homecoming game, the woman went to a bar in town. She says around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, she was told the bar was closing. Soon after a verbal exchange happened between her and the officer. She claims she was dancing as she walked out but was thrown down by the officer then maced.
"We are currently investigating the incident."
Mamou Police Chief Brent Zackery says that the woman’s description of what happened Friday isn’t the whole story. The woman was brought to a local hospital when she was unresponsive following the incident.
“She pretty much made herself fall out on the ground but she was actually trying to dance on the officer and they both ended up falling. We were told that when she left with the ambulance, she went to the hospital and actually started cutting up at the hospital,” Zackery added.
The woman is in stable condition and Chief Zackery says they’re taking this incident seriously.
“There’s nothing as of now to say about the situation, but it’s an ongoing investigation and I'll have more information to report later on,” says Zackery.
We spoke with the woman and she declined any further comment until her lawyer files paperwork.
Chief Zackery also tells us the officer involved will not be on duty until the internal investigation is finished.
