Vermilion Parish Interim School Board Superintendent Brad Prudhomme announced on Wednesday the decision to cancel some upcoming events high school students in the parish were planning to attend over concerns about the novel coronavirus.

Prudhomme said his decision wasn't easy, but he was considering the safety of the children and community, reports the Abbeville Meridional.

The two events canceled at this time are a trip to New Orleans by the Abbeville High School's culinary team for a Pro Start competition and a trip to Orlando, Fl., by the North Vermilion band for Easter break.

Principal Tommy Byler said his students were disappointed, but understood the decision was a tough call.

Prudhomme will continue to monitor out-of-parish trips taken by clubs or teams. Next week, a group of parish athletes are scheduled to compete in a state powerlifting tournament in Monroe. As of now, the group still plans to attend.
