If you travel down Cushing Avenue in Kaplan over the next few weeks, you'll notice a lot of new signs decorating the median. Mayor Mike Kloesel and the City of Kaplan decided to honor their 2020 graduates with a special tribute downtown.

Each graduating senior has a two-sided congratulation sign with their name on it.

"You've all handled this disruption of your senior year with dignity and class," Kloesel said in a Facebook post.

The photos sit below light poles decorated to announce that Kaplan is "Home of the Pirates!"

Each senior is allowed to keep their sign, but is asked to leave them up until Memorial Day so everyone is able to see them.

Mayor Kloesel also is encouraging each senior to message him a photo on Facebook of them by their sign.

Many in Kaplan feel the signs, born out of unusual circumstances, should become a tradition.

"A lot of the residents say we need to do this every year. I've had some people call me and say, 'Look, if I can be a part of this next year, I'll be happy to donate some money towards that project,'" explained Mayor Kloesel. "It turned into a much bigger deal than we thought."
