St. Mary Parish Councilman James Bennett has pled guilty to one count of stalking.

Bennett, 50, of Morgan City was in court on Tuesday for his arraignment when he entered his guilty plea.

The court then sentenced Bennett to serve six months imprisonment in the St. Mary Parish Jail, which it then suspended, and placed Bennett on supervised probation for one year.

Bennett was also ordered to pay a fine of $500 plus court costs; pay a $200 prosecution cost; perform 20 hours of community service within 60 days; have no contact with the victim; attend, pay for and complete an anger management program and undergo a court-approved psychiatric evaluation.

In February, Bennett was arrested for stalking a Berwick woman.

In May, he was arrested again on drug charges by the state police. He was then arrested yet again later that same week for violating a protective order.

Bennett is the St. Mary Parish councilman representing District 7. He is currently running for re-election to that position unopposed.
