The NAACP Branch of St. Landry Parish released a statement on Friday in solidarity with those protesting racism and unfair treatment by police officers.
"We do not condone the system protecting those in authority who have taken an oath to serve and to protect," the statement reads. "We want the system to monitor the police officers and hold them accountable when they display such acts of disrespect, murder, hate and racism while serving citizens of the United States of America."
The statement can be read in full below.
There is much unrest in America as well as other parts of the world because of the unfair treatment and murdering of people of color. We have witnessed the unfair treatment police officers display against people of color resulting in the extreme outcome to the point of murder
We, The NAACP branch of St. Landry, join millions of others in protest against the unfair treatment of police officers against people of color, the practice of racism in America and hate that is displayed. We do not condone the system protecting those in authority who have taken an oath to serve and to protect. We want the system to monitor the police officers and hold them accountable when they display such acts of disrespect, murder, hate and racism while serving citizen of the United States of America.
We must do better in America. Our young men and women especially deserve a future. Individuals of color deserves a future. Give them an opportunity to fulfill their purpose. Not to have life cut short by the unfair practicing of police officers. Police officers can do better because they are trained to do better. The system must be held accountable for what police officers are doing when accountability is not prevalent.
