Mom and Pop businesses across Acadiana participated in Small Business Saturday today.
The annual day encourages shoppers to spend money locally instead of at big box or retail stores.
Some businesses in Lafayette Parish say the initiative not only helps them, but the community as a whole.
"By shopping local, your sales tax dollars stay in this community where we can improve our schools, our drainage, and our roads, instead of shopping at big box stores or online merchants out of town where our tax dollars do not stay here in the community," said Charlotte Cryer, owner of Caroline & Company.
Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
