While you're shopping in stores this holiday season thieves can be outside doing their own shopping in the parking lot. It's important to be safe.
On Thursday, a man was arrested at the Target on Ambassador Caffery for attempted burglary.
State Attorney General Jeff Landry is offering some tips.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Never leave your personal items or packages unattended and be alert when loading major purchases into your vehicle.
Amanda Hetherwick usually shops with her kids, but on Black Friday she was alone. She says being aware is something she is already practicing.
"Just always be aware of your surroundings , and if you see something you're unsure about, I would let someone know" Hetherwick said.
- Keep all valuable items including electronics and bags out of the front seat.
Juston Stelly says when it comes to shopping safety, common sense is what he uses.
"Put anything you have a value of out sight, definitely not in the front seat" Stelly said.
- If you're dropping off bags while shopping at numerous stores, move your car closer to the next store. Thieves can often watch you and estimate how long you'll be gone.
- When shopping at night, park in well lit areas.
And most importantly... Lock your car!
"Oh yeah, that's a given" Stelly said.
