LAFAYETTE — Lafayette Parish election officials say early voting numbers are up this year.

According to The Advocate, more than 1,000 more ballots were cast in the first four days of this early voting period than were cast during the 2015 gubernatorial race.

Clerk of Court Louis Perret says that could mean the parish will see an overall higher voter turnout this year, but he told the newspaper he remains "cautiously optimistic."

Early voting continues through Saturday at the Registrar of Voters Office.
