The Lafayette sign downtown has been painted for the Fourth of July.

Three veterans groups - American Legion Post 241, AmVets Chapter 2007 and Marine Corps League Acadiana Detachment #488 - teamed up to have the sign painted in anticipation of the Uncle Sam's Jam that takes place in Parc International on July 3.

"Independence Day is coming up, so we applied for a permit to paint the sign with the stars and stripes," explained Michael Leblanc, commander of the Post 241.

A group of volunteers came out on Saturday and painted the sign, he said.

It's important to recognize the holiday, Leblanc added.

"Everybody that served gave something. Some gave a lot," Leblanc said. "Independence Day - that's our freedom. That's what we're here for, to enjoy it."

If you'd like to paint the sign, there is a procedure to apply for a permit to do so. You can find it here.
