October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and residents in New Iberia honored victims at a vigil held this evening.

A candlelight vigil was held tonight in Bouligny Plaza in New Iberia to remember all those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.

The vigil, hosted by Chez Hope, honored survivors and remembered those who have lost their lives. Organizers also gave out Helping Hands Awards, an award presented to law enforcement officers who go above and beyond to help a survivor or Chez Hope.

Sandy Bernard, Iberia Parish Community Advocate with Chez Hope, explained that because it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, "Anywhere in Acadiana that you are, your domestic violence program will be doing some kind of awareness event so that the public knows that this is going on, is aware, and there's people here to help you...you are not alone if you're a victim of domestic violence."

If you or someone you know are the victim of domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
