A blood drive will be held on Friday, February 28, to support the family of 8-year-old Jamal Robinson, who died from injuries sustained in a drive-by shooting earlier this month.

The drive will be at Caneview Elementary from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each unit collected will help defray the cost of medical expenses for Jamal's family.

If you would like to donate, call Lourdes Blood Donor Center at 337-470-4483.

The school also provided an incentive to students - each student who recruits an adult to donate blood will be invited to a pizza party.

Caneview held a voluntary dress-down day on Wednesday, where students and staff who made a small monetary donation could participate. The school announced on Facebook that they raised more than $6,000 that will go towards Jamal's funeral.

The Iberia Parish School District has provided counselors for the students and staff of Caneview to help those needing support during this time.

Jamal was injured in a drive-by shooting on N. Neco Town Road in Iberia Parish on February 11. Police say the suspect began shooting into a group of people gathered outside the home, and the 8-year-old Jamal was the only person injured. Jamal was transported to a Baton Rouge hospital in critical condition, where he died a few days later. The suspect, identified as Jonas Hawk, is now facing charges that include 14 counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and one count of First Degree Murder.

Funeral services will be held at Fletcher Funeral Home on Saturday at 11 a.m. for Jamal.
