"It's a bad situation. We need help and we need people from around the country to come and help. We just need awareness."

While the state is bracing for Tropical Storm Sally, many people in Southwest Louisiana are still recovering from Hurricane Laura that made landfall just a few weeks ago. In many cases, they’re getting help from their own community.

Although the building has suffered damage, staff and volunteers at Southwest Louisiana Healthcare Center in Lake Charles say their community comes first.

"We can't turn our backs. We have to be here to do this work. That's the work that we do as a community health center and that's the work that we are going to continue to do in this community,” said, SWLA Community Affairs Director Dianna Ross.

Staff and volunteers at the healthcare center have been working for nearly three weeks to help out families who are still in need.

Darius Clayton is volunteering while staying in an RV at the center since evacuating from his own home. Although the clean up efforts will be a long process, Clayton is hopeful his community will bounce back.

"Anyone in the community that needs help, needs resources, you can come to a place like this and receive help," said Clayton. "That's what I love about this community, because if nobody else will, we'll have each others back."

The organization says they'll continue to provide as long as it's needed.
