The new roundabout at Hospital Drive and Girard Park is now open to traffic.

Lafayette Consolidated Government held a ribbon cutting to officially open the site which has been under construction since November 2019.

Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory, LCG staff, and councilmembers Nanette Cook and John Guilbeau were on hand for the ceremony.

The roundabout, according to LCG, will create a safer intersection and is expected to reduce congestion and crashes.

"What a roundabout does is reduce the number of fatalities and the severity of injuries in an accident," explained Monique Boulet, CEO of Acadiana Planning Commission. "It slows traffic movement down so if an incident does happen it has many fewer impacts on the passengers."

The roundabout's construction was funded with a combination of Highway Safety Improvement Program (FHWA) funds and FHWA Metropolitan Planning Organization funds in coordination with Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), the Acadiana Planning Commission, and Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG).

Lafayette currently leads the state in the number of planned and constructed roundabouts. To date, LCG says 14 roundabouts have been built in Lafayette Parish.
