LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Public Library Board of Control met Monday to appoint Danny Gillane as interim library director.

According to the board meeting's agenda, the interim library director will serve for a period of up to six months. The board was also set to discuss a plans to search for a permanent library director.

According to our media partners at The Advocate, Gillane is a member of the Lafayette Public Library’s support staff who previously served as the development and gifts librarian at the University of Louisiana’s Dupré Library.

Gillane's appointment comes after the former Library Director Teresa Elberson retired in January.

Elberson announced her resignation shortly after the board's Jan. 25 meeting where board members rejected a grant that would create a program to educate community members on the history of voting rights in the United States.

The grant would fund books, two guest speakers and discussion groups on the topic. Some board members expressed concern that the series was not "apolitical."

During the meeting some board members deemed the program's speakers "extremely far left leaning" and said they weren't going to "represent the other side."

KATC's Eman Boyd will have more details at 10 p.m.
