Lafayette firefighters receive service awards for rescuing woman trapped in floodwaters

LAFAYETTE — Seven crew members with the Lafayette Fire Department have been recognized for their life-saving efforts in a June rescue in Lafayette.

On June 6, 2019, firefighters rescued a woman from a vehicle that was trapped in floodwaters at the Jefferson Street underpass. When crews arrived on scene the woman's car was underwater.

Captain Brett Denais, one of the seven involved in the rescue called the situation one of "life or death." The rescue crew says it took only one minute to pull the woman to safety. They say no matter the call, they act with urgency.

The woman was uninjured during the rescue.

This week, the seven crew members received Meritorious Service Awards for the rescue. Here are the names of all who participated in the rescue. Among them are captains, engineers and firefighters.They work for stations 2, 3 and 9 in Lafayette.
