UPDATE: The Lafayette Parish School Board has appointed Hannah Smith Mason, the person who will take over the seat in January, to serve out the final weeks of board member Erick Knezek's term.
Knezek, who did not seek re-election, will be replaced by Smith Mason, who won the election for the District 8 seat in October. Mason will take the oath of office for her term in January.
Knezek's resignation was effective the day he married an attorney who is handling several cases involving the school system. He tells KATC he asked for an ethics opinion, but resigned early just in case.
Also on the agenda is a discussion about the proposed budget hearing schedule for the 20-21 budget, and two items related to the placement of portable classrooms at Southside High School. The first would reject the bids submitted for those buildings, because they all exceeded the board's budget. The other would revise the plan for the buildings. The board had planned to use some existing buildings, but needed a waiver from the Youngsville City Council to do so. The council refused to grant the waiver, so the board will have to revise the plan.
The board meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of the Central Office on Chaplin Drive.
